One Week in Yogyakarta and the Borobudur Countryside

Taman Sari’s bathing pool and stone fountains, featured in our One Week in Yogyakarta itinerary.

One week in Yogyakarta and the Borobudur countryside gives you time to explore the city and both

major temple sites without spending every afternoon in a car. Begin with four nights at Garrya Bianti

Yogyakarta, choosing a Sunset View Villa with its own pool. The location outside the center suits a trip

with a private driver, and the first day can be devoted to arriving, swimming, and having an early dinner.

How to Spend One Week in Yogyakarta

Spend the second morning with a guide at the Kraton, the sultan’s palace, and nearby Taman Sari.

Understanding the role of the court makes these places much more interesting than a circuit of pretty

buildings. Have lunch in town and return to the hotel before the heat wears you out; there will be

other opportunities to browse shops.

Leave the next morning free and visit Prambanan in the late afternoon on day three. Its reliefs and

towers deserve time with a guide, particularly if you stay for the Ramayana Ballet that evening.

Performances follow a schedule, so arrange the temple visit around an actual show date. A late return

is easier to enjoy when breakfast tomorrow remains negotiable.

Day four takes you into Gunungkidul for a guided hike at Nglanggeran, an ancient volcanic formation

overlooking the countryside. There are steep sections and narrow gaps between rocks, so choose the

route to suit your fitness and avoid a wet, slippery trail. Have a local lunch before returning to Garrya

for the afternoon.

Try a batik workshop on day five before traveling to Amanjiwo for the final two nights. Drawing with

hot wax provides a useful lesson in patience; if a stray drip lands in the wrong place, call it your

signature. At Amanjiwo, I’d choose a Borobudur Pool Pavilion for its private pool and views toward

the temple. The hillside setting also makes it a good place to spend the afternoon after the transfer.

Visit Borobudur with a guide on day six, taking time over the carved panels as you climb toward the

stupas. Keep the rest of the day for Amanjiwo, perhaps adding a short village walk if you feel restless.

On day seven, have breakfast before your airport transfer. Book a ticket that includes the temple

structure if you want to climb: a courtyard ticket only admits you to the surrounding grounds. Confirm

palace opening hours and ballet dates before fixing the daily order.
