From the Founder

Hi, my name is Gaya, and I’m from Switzerland.

I first traveled to Indonesia in 2015. What was supposed to be a summer trip turned into a fascination with a country I kept coming back to.

A year later, I moved to Indonesia to study the Indonesian language, culture, and history at one of the country’s oldest universities. I eventually went back to Switzerland to finish my bachelor’s and master’s degrees, but Indonesia had already become a huge part of my life. During those years, I returned to the archipelago several times a year, visited a new island each time, and built strong friendships across the country.

The more I traveled, the more I realized how little most travelers actually see of Indonesia.

Over the years, I explored places far beyond the usual routes: Java, Aceh, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, Madura, Sumba, Flores, Rote, and many others. Every island felt completely different—different cultures, languages, landscapes, food, traditions, and ways of life. In July 2025, I moved back to Indonesia permanently.

Today, Indo by Design is built on more than ten years of travel, local connections, and firsthand experience living in the country. I also work closely with Indonesian friends and local contacts who continue to shape the way I discover and share Indonesia.

I created Indo by Design for travelers who want something more personal than mass tourism and generic itineraries. Trips designed around who you are, what you enjoy, and the kind of experience you actually want to have in Indonesia.
